What You Need to Know About Throwing a College Party

By Brittany Loeffler on March 15, 2019

There is no denying that college culture includes partying. It’s in all of the movies about college and Greek life and is ultimately expected once you go off to college. However, going to college parties and throwing a college party are two very different experiences. Like with any event, the planning should be thought through and plans should be in place in case the party gets out of hand.

Before throwing a college party, there are a few precautions you should take to ensure everyone’s safety and protect you and your housemates from getting into trouble.

Hide Your Personal Belongings

When you allow people into your house when throwing a college party, your personal items and valuables may be at risk. You never truly know the person you are inviting in. That girl from your English class may just have some sticky fingers. You don’t want to wake up the next morning looking for your computer and find that it is missing.

The best way to avoid party guests stealing your belongings is to hide them. Take your computer, passport, cash, jewelry, and any other valuables and hide them in your bedroom. Hide them under your mattress, inside bags in your closet, or in between the clothes in your dresser drawers. If your bedroom door has a lock on it, make sure to lock it and that nobody goes in there.

To guarantee that your belongings won’t be stolen is to get them out of the house. Ask one of your friends if you can keep some of your most prized belongings at their house during the party so there is absolutely no chance that someone will steal them.

Unfortunately, there are times that strangers slip into a college party looking to steal items. This isn’t an uncommon occurrence, so make sure to take precautions against it.

Be Mindful of the Noise

Throwing a college party means having loud music and a lot of people over talking, yelling, and singing. This can get pretty loud, which is the leading cause of parties getting busted. Annoyed neighbors will call the cops with a noise complaint, which sends the cops right to your door to bust your college party and everyone attending.

A day or two before throwing a college party, knock on your neighbors’ doors to give them the courtesy of letting them know that you will be having a party that weekend. It’s a good idea to give them your phone number too. Let them know that if the party is getting too loud that they should call or text you and let you know so you can turn it down. You both don’t want to bother the police about a silly problem like noise.

As for the night of your party, keep the music at a normal level. Don’t go all out with crazy speakers and turning the bass up. People will still have a great time even if they aren’t screaming over the music.

Have a Safety Plan

It’s crucial to have a safety plan in place in case anything goes wrong while throwing a college party. Talk with your roommates about potential situations and how you all should handle them if they are to arise at the party.

If alcohol is being served at the party, remind your roommates to keep an eye on how much people have had to drink. Don’t give alcohol to someone who looks like they had a little too much to drink. Many schools have a medical amnesty program in place where if someone drinks too much and shows signs of alcohol poisoning, you can call them for help and won’t get in trouble if the person is underage. Save this number in your phone in case you notice a guest needing help.

Always keep an eye on who is coming into the party. When a lot of people are invited, it’s easy for strangers to sneak into your home. Be sure that everyone at the party knows the hosts or a friend of the hosts. Better yet, it’s a good idea to have someone who is throwing the party standing near the door to greet people and make sure they know the guests.

Expect to Have a Mess to Clean

Throwing a college party means cleaning up a big mess afterward. Be sure you have all of the cleaning supplies you need before you throw the party so you don’t have to go out the day after and buy these things. This just wastes time and energy.

Once everyone leaves the night of the party, try to clean up as much as you can before you go to sleep. Throw away empty cans, cups, and plates in a garbage bag and wipe up spills. It’s so much better to wake up to a half-cleaned apartment than to a completely messy one.

Ready to Throw Your College Party

It takes a lot of skill, patience, and planning to throw a successful college party. To prepare for the party, hide your valuables and belongings in your room somewhere or hand them off to a friend. Let your neighbors know that you are having a party and ask them to contact you if it is getting to be too loud. Come up with a safety plan to make sure everyone is safe and there aren’t strangers in the house. Lastly, expect to have a mess to clean up the day after and try to clean some of it before going to bed that night.
